of their homes. it happened last night in manassas, virginia. this fire spread quickly between close-together homes in the 8300 block of tillotts loop. kristin fisher is joining us with more. >> the fire is out but the families are feeling the affects of this massive fire. three homes were destroyed t. eight more damaged. and the families that were living inside are being housed by the red cross. started around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. that's this when the fire broke out. neighbors heard a loud bang and saw two houses engulfed in flames an then the flames spread to eight houses total. neighbors said it looked like dominoes falling. the flames were so powerful it carried embers 350-yards away. the plumes of smoke so thick and heavy that many driving to manassas after work thought that a plane had crashed nearby. >> i saw five plumes separate. and i thought, man i hope -- i know the airport is there and everything. we have great security here. >> reporter: incredibly no one was inside the homes when the fire broke out. a few people did go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. but for
in almost 100 years, virginia has put a woman to death. 41-year-old teresa lewis was convicted in 2002 of hiring the two men who killed her husband and stepsoin an elaborate scam to collect insurance money. >>> the fire described three homes in the 8300 block of tillup loop in manassas. jane has more. >> reporter: eight homes were damaged or destroyed as strong winds whipped the massive blaze through a row of single-family homes. an upscale neighborhood turns into a fiery inferno as strong winds cause fles to jump from roof to roof. amateur video shows a fast-moving blaze as firefighters struggle to get control and neighbors start to panic. >> it was only ten minute before all of these went up. it was really, really horrific. i said, you kw, i need to pack some things and get out of he. i knew how close we were and seeing how fast it happened. it was pretty bad. >> reporter: witnesses say the fireroke out in the back of 8355 tillut loop. the heatrom the fire caused vinyl siding on three homes to melt. one neighbor ran or to door to make sure everyone made it out okay. >> i ran to the g
are underway after a massive fire destroyed three northern virginia mes and damaged several others. the blaze broke out on tillett loop in manassas and quickly spread. >> reporter: hot spots kept firefighters busy all night and all morning long. it was huge. i've never seen something so big. >> reporter: kathy kennedy is one of the lucky ones. her home had moderate damage but is salvageable. she was able to escape with her two young children. >> reporter: the neighbors say the fire started in the backyard and possibly on the deck of a home on tillett loop. firefighters say the win caused the fire and flames to jump from house to house. all the homes in the summer lake neighborhood sit close to one another. >> it is very close. it is a house. but the price was right at that time. a disaster. >> reporter: it took dozens of firefighters more than two hours to bring the firender control. three home were destroyed. five others damaged. a few pets in one of theomes didn't survive. >> i noticed several speculative causes and origin have been reported by witnesses. would not put any credence in those
